Design Philosophy

At Mermade Pearl Studio, we approach pearls through the lens of contemporary fashion design.

Rather than beginning with traditional jewellery forms, we begin with the pearls themselves — their shape, texture, proportion and natural individuality. Each pearl offers different possibilities, informing how a piece takes shape and how it might interact with the wearer.

Our design process draws on the principles of fashion: silhouette, balance, movement and composition. Pearls become our chosen medium, much like fabric to a fashion designer, allowing us to explore jewellery beyond conventional settings and the traditional round strand.

We are particularly drawn to irregular forms — sculptural baroque pearls, delicate keshi and unexpected natural shapes that lend themselves to expressive, contemporary designs.

Many pieces are only created in small quantities, allowing room for experimentation and an evolving design language rather than fixed collections.

Our intention is to create pearl jewellery that feels considered yet effortless, distinctive yet wearable — pieces that become part of an individual's personal style rather than being reserved for a particular occasion.
