Materials & Care
At Mermade Pearl Studio, each piece begins with material.
We work across a considered range—balancing natural variation, durability, and how a piece is intended to be worn.
Pearls
We use both freshwater and saltwater pearls.
Freshwater pearls form the foundation of many designs. They offer a wide range of shapes—baroque, keshi, and irregular forms that resist uniformity.
Saltwater pearls are used more selectively, often in studio pieces and one-off works. They are typically rarer, with a more refined surface and higher lustre.
No two pearls are identical.
Variation is not a flaw—it is the point.
Metals
Materials are selected with intention, offering different levels of durability and finish depending on the piece.
Stainless Steel
Durable, low maintenance, and resistant to tarnishing. Suitable for everyday wear.
Gold-Plated (Copper or Brass Base)
A layer of gold applied over a base metal.
Offers a warm gold finish at a more accessible price point.
Best suited for occasional to regular wear with care.
Gold-Filled
A thicker layer of gold mechanically pressure bonded to a base metal.
More durable than gold plating and designed for longer wear, commonly used in Permanent Jewelry.
925 Sterling Silver
A precious metal with a softer, more refined finish.
May naturally oxidise over time and can be polished back to shine.
On Material Choice
Different materials exist for different purposes.
Some pieces are designed for everyday ease.
Others prioritise longevity or one-off design.
Each product page specifies the materials used—this is the best place to understand how a piece is intended to be worn.
Care
Pearls and plated finishes benefit from a level of care that reflects their nature.
Wearing
Put your jewellery on last—after perfume, skincare, and hair products.
Direct contact with chemicals can dull pearls and affect metal finishes over time.
Water & Moisture
Occasional contact with water is fine.
Avoid prolonged exposure, particularly in:
– chlorinated pools
– salt water
– hot showers
Storage
Store pieces separately to avoid scratching.
A soft pouch or lined box is ideal, particularly for pearls.
Cleaning
Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wear.
Avoid:
– harsh chemicals
– abrasive materials
– ultrasonic cleaners (especially for pearls)
Gold-Plated Care
Gold-plated pieces will naturally wear over time.
To extend their lifespan:
– keep dry where possible
– avoid perfumes and lotions
– store carefully after use
Gold-Filled Care
Gold-filled pieces are more durable and resistant to tarnishing.
With proper care, they can maintain their finish for extended wear.
Pearl Care
Pearls are organic and softer than most gemstones.
They benefit from:
– gentle handling
– minimal chemical exposure such as lotions, perfumes and surfactants
– regular wear, as natural oils can help maintain lustre
