On Pearls & Sustainability
Pearls occupy an unusual place in the world of precious materials.
They are not mined from the earth or cut from a larger stone. A pearl is grown by a living mollusc, layer by layer, over time — and the quality of what it produces is closely connected to the environment in which it lives.
That relationship makes the conversation around pearl sustainability particularly interesting.
No precious material is entirely without impact. But compared with many traditionally mined gemstones and precious metals, pearls offer a fundamentally different relationship between material, environment and production.
A Gem That Has to Be Grown
Cultured pearls begin with a living oyster or mussel.
Unlike many forms of agriculture, pearl-producing molluscs do not require manufactured feed. They are filter feeders, drawing naturally occurring plankton and suspended organic matter from the surrounding water as they grow.
The pearl itself develops slowly inside the mollusc as layers of nacre are deposited over time.
This means pearl production is fundamentally tied to biological processes. Healthy molluscs need suitable water quality, food availability, temperature and space — and poor environmental conditions can directly affect their survival and the pearls they produce.
A pearl farm cannot be entirely separated from the health of the ecosystem around it.
Pearls and the Water Around Them
Oysters and mussels are natural filter feeders.
As they feed, they move water across their gills and remove suspended particles from the water column. Under appropriate conditions, bivalve aquaculture can contribute to nutrient cycling, water filtration and other ecosystem services.
Pearl farms can also create structure within the water, providing habitat and shelter for fish and other marine life. In some pearl-growing regions, farm areas can offer a degree of protection from other forms of extraction or fishing.
As with any form of aquaculture, responsible management matters. Stocking density, site selection, waste and farming infrastructure all influence the environmental impact of a farm.
The interesting distinction is that successful pearl cultivation depends on maintaining the aquatic environment well enough for the oysters or mussels to thrive.
The material and its environment are directly connected.
A Different Kind of Precious Material
No precious material is entirely without impact, and cultured pearls are no exception. Pearl farming uses equipment, energy and transport, and the way a farm is managed still matters.
But compared with many traditionally mined gemstones and precious materials, pearls occupy a distinctly different position.
Gemstone and precious-metal mining can involve significant disturbance to land and waterways, complex global supply chains and, in some regions, serious concerns around labour conditions, community displacement and human rights.
Pearls, by contrast, are grown rather than excavated.
Their cultivation depends on living oysters and mussels, which in turn depend on clean water and functioning aquatic ecosystems. A pearl farm therefore has a direct interest in maintaining the environmental conditions its molluscs need to survive and produce high-quality pearls.
Responsibly managed pearl farming is not without its challenges, but it can operate with comparatively little physical disturbance to the landscape and, in some environments, alongside healthy populations of fish and other marine life.
For us, that makes pearls a compelling choice among precious materials — not because they are perfectly sustainable, but because their value is created through cultivation rather than extraction, and because the health of the material is inseparable from the health of the environment in which it grows.
We think that is a meaningful distinction.
Freshwater and Saltwater Pearls
There is no single environmental footprint that applies to every pearl.
Freshwater pearls are generally cultivated in mussels in lakes, rivers and managed freshwater environments, while saltwater varieties — including Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea pearls — are cultivated in marine oysters.
Different species, locations and farming systems bring different environmental considerations.
At Mermade, freshwater pearls form the foundation of much of our work because of the extraordinary diversity of shapes, colours and forms they offer. We also work with limited-edition saltwater pearls when we find examples with unusual character, rarity or presence.
Rather than treating one type of pearl as inherently superior to another, we are interested in the individual material in front of us.
Using What Nature Actually Makes
There is another side of sustainability that matters to us: what we consider worthy of being used.
Pearls do not emerge perfectly identical.
They can be elongated, flattened, ridged, asymmetrical, ringed, heavily textured or almost impossibly irregular. Conventional ideas of perfection have historically placed the greatest value on roundness, smooth surfaces and uniformity.
Mermade has always been interested in another direction.
Baroque, keshi and unusual pearls are not materials we need to disguise or correct. Their irregularity is often where the design begins.
Working this way allows the pearl to suggest the piece rather than requiring every pearl to conform to a predetermined specification.
A shape that might be inconvenient for one design can become the reason another exists.
Small Batches Over Endless Repetition
We don't design around the idea that every piece should be reproducible indefinitely.
Pearls arrive in batches. Within those batches, particular colours, proportions and forms appear — sometimes only once.
We work with what is available, make in relatively small quantities and allow some designs to disappear when the pearls that created them are gone.
This approach is partly aesthetic, but it also reflects how we think natural materials should be treated.
Not everything needs to become a permanent product.
Some materials are better allowed to dictate their own limits.
Made to Stay in Circulation
Sustainability does not end when a piece leaves the studio.
Pearls can be restrung. Findings can be replaced. Lengths can be altered. An existing strand can be reconsidered years later and become something different.
We would rather see a piece returned to the studio, repaired, altered or redesigned than discarded because one component has reached the end of its useful life.
There is something particularly appropriate about this with pearls.
They are materials created slowly. They should not have to belong to a fast cycle of consumption.
A More Considered Kind of Precious
For us, sustainability is less about attaching a perfect label to a material and more about understanding the way that material came into being, how it is used and how long it can remain valuable.
Pearls have their own environmental considerations. So do the metals, findings, packaging and transportation involved in turning them into finished pieces.
But within the broader world of precious materials, pearls offer something unusual.
They are grown rather than mined.
They depend on living organisms and viable waterways.
Their irregularities can be embraced rather than discarded.
And once made into jewellery, they can be repaired, restrung, redesigned and carried forward for decades.
That does not make every pearl automatically sustainable.
It does make pearls, particularly when responsibly cultivated and thoughtfully used, a precious material worth looking at differently.
Not perfect. Not endlessly reproducible. Grown slowly, selected individually, and made to be kept.
